Our brains are wired for connection, but trauma rewires them for protection. That's why healthy relationships can be challenging for people who have experienced trauma.

 

Sometimes we experience challenging circumstances that change our belief in ourselves and the world around us. Everyone has these experiences, but there are times when we can get stuck.

Our response to trauma is a normal biological event. However, sometimes that information isn't processed in our brains, and we still respond in ways designed to get us out of life-threatening situations, even when we are safe.

While the trauma is not forgotten or dismissed, it can be re-processed in a way that allows us to move through life without re-experiencing the painful reality of that trauma repeatedly in overwhelming ways.

Trauma causes a breakdown in the brain's communication with itself and the body. This can often lead to distrust within ourselves, our emotions, and our perception of reality.

Maybe it feels disheartening to learn that trauma changes the brain, but what is so encouraging is that healing ALSO changes the brain.

I will be honest here. We don't just get over or move on from our trauma, but we can learn to make space for it and learn to carry it differently. We can learn to thrive despite the trauma we endured and not let it define us.
